Skills: Illustration, Writing, Cross Department Collaboration

2023

I collaborated with computer science and statistics professors to write and illustrate a children's book introducing the concept of topology. Funded by a grant, the book was designed to make abstract mathematical ideas accessible and engaging for young readers through storytelling, playful visuals, and interactive elements.

The Problem

Teaching topology to children in a way that is both engaging and comprehensible required a creative approach that balanced educational value with entertainment.

The Research

I studied mathematical concepts with professors to ensure accuracy while making them digestible for young minds. I analyzed popular children's books, noting their use of engaging characters, rhymes, and interactive storytelling. Elements such as built-in games, that encouraged parent-child reading and learning, were discovered.

The Solution

I used the visual of a narwhal’s tusk picking up objects to illustrate topological holes. Learning and interaction were encouraged with a side game and I incorporated rhyme and a question-based format to make the reading experience more dynamic and enjoyable.
